About DC Emancipation Day

The DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1862 ended slavery in Washington, DC, freed 3,100 individuals, reimbursed those who had legally owned them, and offered the newly freed women and men money to emigrate. It is this legislation, and the courage and struggle of those who fought to make it a reality, that we commemorate every April 16, DC Emancipation Day.

He is also the founder and executive director of DC Fashion Week, a non-profit organization and the 5th largest-growing fashion week in the US. He was featured as himself on the hit TLC tv series DC Cupcakes (season 2), and celebrities and fashionistas have worn and adorned his fashions, including Fantasia, Victoria Rowell (The Young and the Restless), Omarosa Manigault Newman(The Apprentice), Nyle DiMarco (Winner of America’s Next Top Model) and Sheryl Lee Ralph (Dream Girls & Moesha) and most recently Candiace Dillard-Bassett (The Housewives of Potomac) and recording artist and reality tv star Tamar Braxton (Braxton Family Values, Dancing with the Stars and winner of Celebrity Big Brother) (2022).

About Hoodvlm

Deontré Hancock from Next in Fashion Season 2: One of the Finalists of the Show, Deontre Is renowned for his streetwear designs. He immediately won over the judges and hosts of Next in Fashion with his work. Hip-hop was a significant inspiration for the designer as he tackled the first task for the event, which revolved around the idea of royalty. As a result, traditional hip-hop clothing was presented majestically, impressing everyone right away—even the legendary Donatella Versace. Deontré continued to dominate the contest, marking the beginning of his reign as one of the best competitors.

Deontré is from Washington, D.C. However, he got his education on the west coast at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He's been in the business for 12 years and has his label, Hoodlvm. The menswear designer has also received critical acclaim in Fashion Week events in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, New York City, and Baltimore.
